Puerto Rico is a territory of the US with commonwealth status. Puerto Rico was ceded to the US as a result of the Spanish-American War. Island residents were granted US citizenship in 1917. Island residents are US citizens but do not vote in US presidential elections but they may vote in Democratic and Republican party presidential primary elections. The fort was built in approximately 1634 by the Spaniards as part of a defensive system in Old San Juan to protect against land based attacks. The Spanish spent hundreds of years fortifying Old San Juan in order for Spain to control access and commerce in and out of the New World. San Juan\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s rich port area was protected by the Castillo San Felipe del Morro Fortress.<\/p>\n<p>San Juan, considered a melting pot, is a welcoming city filled with rich culture old and new. With its blend of 16th century buildings, cathedrals, narrow cobblestone streets, open air markets, trendy restaurants and clubs and its National Rain Forest better known as El Yunque.
