King\’s Wharf, Bermuda

Bermuda is a string of sub-tropical islands linked by causeways and bridges approximately 650 miles east of North Carolina (United States) in the Atlantic Ocean. Bermuda is an overseas territory of the UK. Queen Elizabeth II acts as the formal head of state and appoints a Governor, to represent her in Bermuda. Bermuda’s government consists of the Governor, a Premier, a Cabinet, and a Parliament comprised of an appointed Senate and the elected House of Assembly. Bermuda got its name from a Spaniard, Juan de Bermudez in 1503 but the islands remained uninhabited after that for more than a century.

In approximately 1609 settlement of Bermuda began. The British ship, Sea Venture, was blown onto the reefs by a hurricane; reefs were disastrous to ships that came too close. The Sea Venture, with settlers and supplies was on its way to the New World settlement of Jamestown, Virginia. Some of the settlers decided to settle in Bermuda while most of the settlers continued on their journey to Virginia in the vessel they created while stranded. Bermuda’s character as a British colony was established by the settlers who decided to stay in Bermuda. Thus began the inhabitation of Bermuda.

Located in the Hamilton Parish is Crystal Caves, a subterranean cavern with helectite formations, which includes pathways above a 55 feet deep underground lake. Bermuda has some unusual pink sand beaches, clear blue ocean waters and various other tourist attractions. Rental cars are not available in Bermuda. Bermuda has a variety of shops primarily located on three areas of the island (Hamilton, St. George’s and the Royal Naval Dockyard). A few of the activities within the Royal Naval Dockyard are a shopping mall, dining, swim with the dolphins and the Maritime Museum. Bermuda dollars and U.S. currencies are accepted interchangeably in Bermuda, all other currency (Canadian dollars, British pounds, Euros) will need to be exchanged.
